About Prairie Sun Solar
Over 1,000+ systems installed across the province. Red Seal licensed trades. Zero subcontracting. A Saskatchewan company built for Saskatchewan conditions.

Our Story
Prairie Sun Solar started the way most good Saskatchewan businesses do: with hard work, real skills, and a gap that needed filling. Brenden Owens and Dylan Toniello — a Red Seal Journeyman Roofer and a Red Seal Journeyman Electrician — saw that solar in this province was being done by companies that didn't know the land, didn't know the weather, and didn't stick around after the install. So in 2018 they founded Prairie Sun Solar as 50/50 partners and went to work changing that.
From day one the model was different. Every system installed by our own crew, every credential Red Seal certified, every panel chosen for Saskatchewan winters. No subcontracting. No franchise playbook. Catlin Schneider joined in 2020 and became a partner in 2021. Trevor Rieger came on as the fourth partner in 2022. The four of us together carry over 50 years of combined trades and engineering experience between us.
Almost a decade and over 1,000 systems later, that approach hasn't changed. We are still the same local team, still answering the phone, still showing up on time, and still building systems that hold up when it is -40 outside.

Milestones
Brenden Owens (Red Seal Journeyman Roofer) and Dylan Toniello (Red Seal Journeyman Electrician) co-found Prairie Sun Solar as 50/50 partners in Regina. First residential installs across Regina and Southern Saskatchewan in the same year.
First farm ground-mount installations across rural Saskatchewan. Hire our first apprentices and our second Red Seal Journeyman Electrician.
Catlin Schneider joins as one of our first sales educators. First commercial rooftop systems land: 100 kW for the Kawacatoose First Nation school, 26 kW on the water treatment plant, 31 kW on the band office.
First 200 kW install — two SolarEdge systems for the Town of Wilkie in northwest Saskatchewan. Proved we'll travel anywhere in the province for the right project. 100 kW ground-mount also installed for SaskWater outside Saskatoon (live monitoring still online). Catlin Schneider becomes the third partner.
Trevor Rieger comes on as the fourth partner, bringing the deep service and warranty side of the business — closing the loop on post-install support.
Big-build year. 400 kW rooftop install at the SaskPower Logistics Warehouse (Global Transportation Hub, West Regina). Three SaskBuilds and Procurement projects land in the same year: 100 kW on the Saskatoon Court of King's Bench, 100 kW for CVA (Central Vehicle Agency) in Regina, and our first high-rise rooftop install — 70 kW at Lloyd Place in Regina.
Take on reactive and preventative maintenance at the Cowessess First Nation Awasis Solar Facility — 10 MW AC / ~14 MW DC, 33,325 bifacial panels on east-west single-axis trackers, three 4 MVA SMA inverters — utility-scale operations join the mix. Cross the 1,000-install company milestone with a maintained 4.9-star Google rating.
Biggest single-roof install to date — 421 kW on the CBC building in Regina, delivered through SaskBuilds and Procurement. A second SaskBuilds project, the Saskatchewan Polytechnic Moose Jaw Energy Lab, paired solar with our first commercial battery storage system. Largest commercial portfolio also lands this year: 13 systems totaling roughly 288 kW for Avenue Living, delivered through Clark Builders across three Saskatoon developments — Chancellor Gate (six projects, ~132 kW), Lakewood Manor (four, ~94 kW), and Borden Place (three, ~61 kW).
Federal tailwinds reshape the economics for Saskatchewan commercial and farm solar — Bill C-15 receives Royal Assent on March 26, locking in a 30% refundable tax credit plus 100% first-year expensing for incorporated commercial and farm systems. Today: 17-person team. Workload now splits about one-third residential, one-third commercial, one-third farm & ag solar, with another ~10% on utility-scale maintenance contracts.
The Team
Co-Founder & CEO
BASc Petroleum Systems Engineering from the University of Regina and a Red Seal Journeyman Roofer. Owned and operated a roofing company for 10 years before co-founding Prairie Sun Solar with Dylan Toniello in 2018 as a 50/50 partnership. Spent five years with the Regina Rams football team and stays active in the community today — coaching his daughter and son in all their sports, and running the Regina Rams Alumni golf tournament for the past five years.
Co-Founder | Customer Education & Sales
BASc Petroleum Systems Engineering from the University of Regina (same program as Brenden) plus a 4th Class Power Engineering ticket. Joined as one of our first sales educators in 2020 and became a partner in 2021. Grew up on a Saskatchewan farm raising livestock — including wild boar — and that direct, no-nonsense approach carries into how he explains solar to customers. He's the person who walks you through the math, the trade-offs, and the long-term economics so you understand exactly what you're buying. Four-time Brier competitor (national championship) and 2020 Brier bronze medalist, with two Saskatchewan provincial titles in 2017 and 2022.
Co-Founder | Operations Manager
Red Seal Journeyman Electrician and 50/50 co-founder of Prairie Sun Solar alongside Brenden in 2018 — he's the electrical half of the original team. 15 years in commercial electrical before solar, plus 8 years on every type of solar project Saskatchewan throws at us: utility-scale 10+ MW arrays, large commercial rooftops, residential, and farm ground-mount systems. Runs the install crews day-to-day. Lives in Regina with his wife and two kids.
Co-Founder | Service & Warranty Manager
Red Seal Journeyman Electrician with a background in industrial mining and five years in energy management. Came on as the fourth partner in 2022, bringing the deep service and diagnostics side of the operation — he knows monitoring, inverter-to-internet integration, and system troubleshooting cold. He's the person who answers when something needs attention after the install: generator maintenance, battery service, solar diagnostics, all of it. Car guy in his off-hours. The most patient person in the building. Married, three kids.
The Prairie Sun Solar Crew
Behind the four founders is a 17-person team — Red Seal journeyman electricians, apprentices, sales coordinators, and installers — every one of them personally trained and mentored by one of the four owners. We hire for character first and treat our people the way we want to be treated. The same crew that shows up at your property has been working together for years. We don't subcontract, we don't churn through staff, and we don't shortcut the training.

What Our Customers Say
97 Google reviews and counting — 4.9 stars average.Read all reviews
“We hired Prairie Sun Solar in 2019. I think it really helped that they have certified electricians and roofers on staff. Due to this well designed system and SaskPower's net metering program we have enjoyed not having to pay for electrical supply since 2019.”
G&S
Residential customer since 2019
“I have enjoyed only having a 37 dollar electric bill. I had a minor problem with the panels and they were there right away to fix it. They were very professional in their install.”
Dennis
Residential customer
“We bought our home with a Prairie Sun Solar system already installed, and even though we weren't the original purchasers, Trevor and his team went above and beyond to provide support. Their willingness to assist, even when we weren't their direct customers, truly impressed us.”

What Makes Us Different
Electricians and roofers on staff. Not subcontractors with varying credentials. Red Seal certified trades doing the work, every time.
Our crew does every single install. The people who show up at your property work for us. No middlemen, no surprises.
Not a franchise. Not a branch office. A Saskatchewan company started by Saskatchewan people for Saskatchewan conditions.
Every system is engineered for -40°C and heavy snow loads. We know what Saskatchewan weather does to equipment, and we plan for it.
Real technicians on the phone. Not a call centre. When you buy a DIY kit from us, you get the people who have installed 1,000+ systems helping you through yours.
We handle all net metering paperwork and SaskPower applications. We know the process inside and out so you do not have to.
Licensed, Insured & Certified
Insurance certificates and credential verification available on request before any work begins. We're comfortable being checked.
Multi-product certified for both Tesla Powerwall home battery systems and Tesla Wall Connector EV chargers. Tesla's Energy Certified Installer program is selective — we design, install, and warranty the full Tesla Energy ecosystem under a signed Tesla Certified Installer Agreement.
The only SolarEdge Preferred Installer in Saskatchewan. The Preferred tier is SolarEdge's top installer level and requires demonstrated install volume, technical proficiency, and post-install support track record.
Two Red Seal Journeyman Electrician partners (Dylan and Trevor) plus a Red Seal Journeyman Roofer at the founder level (Brenden). Four total journeyman electricians on staff with eight apprentices working under them.
Prairie Sun Solar is a SaskPower Efficiency Partner — the official designation for installers approved to deliver SaskPower Net Metering interconnections. We handle the application, the inspection, and the interconnection for every system.
SIC CSA Solar certification on the partners. Every install designed and built to current Canadian Electrical Code.
Policy #B735761 — clearance certificate available on request. Every member of our crew is covered.
Commercial liability coverage up to $5 million on every project. Certificate of insurance available before any work begins — we'd rather you ask than assume.
What Drives Us
If solar does not make sense for your situation, we will tell you. We would rather lose a sale than install a system that will not deliver.
Every install meets the standard we would want on our own home. No shortcuts, no cheap substitutes, no rushing through.
Solar panels last 25+ years. We plan to be here for all of them. Our relationship with you does not end at installation.
We live here. We work here. When Saskatchewan does well, we do well. Supporting local is not a slogan for us, it is how we operate.
Roots in the Community
We're from Saskatchewan, our kids go to school here, and we show up in our community the same way we want our company to show up for customers. Some of what that looks like:
Active team sponsor. Brenden and Catlin are both Rams alumni and we put our support where our roots are.
Brenden has run the alumni tournament for the past five years, raising over $20,000 each year — every dollar from scratch. Over $100,000 raised for the Rams football program to date.
Sponsorships and tournament participation over multiple years.
Regina Thunder football, Regina Minor Football, and the University of Regina Cougars Women's Hockey program.
Trevor donates plasma regularly — the staff at the Regina clinic know him by name. The kind of quiet community contribution we like to see on our team.
Brenden coaches his daughter and son in all their sports. Active across the local rec leagues.
